Terms Used for Industry Compliance & Safety

Definitions of acronyms used as some of the examples:

  • CRM – Control Room Management
    Note: Program requirement for control center

  • EH&S – Environmental Health and Safety
    Note: Some operators add an S at the end for sustainability

  • EPA – Environmental Protection Agency (Federal)

  • ESG – Environmental Social Governance (Program requirement as referenced in regulations)

  • FWS – Fish and Wildlife Service

  • GHG – Green House Gas

  • IMP – Integrity Management Program (Program requirement for Oil and Gas pipeline systems, includes asset risk management)

  • IRA – Inflation Reduction Act
    Note: New government program targeting various monetization aspects around GHG/emissions for taxes etc.

  • LOPA – Layers of Protection Analysis (Refinery, Plant, and Major process equipment terminology)

  • NFPA – National Fire Protection Agency
    Note: Many requirements and standards built within safety programs

  • O&M – Operations and Maintenance Manual

  • OSHA – Occupational Safety and Health Administration

  • PODS – Pipeline Open Data Systems
    Note: General data storage/repository name for pipeline systems

  • PHMSA – Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration (Federal rules for pipeline systems under the DOT)

  • PSM – Process Safety Management (an OSHA program)

  • TRRC – Texas Rail Road Commission (State level pipeline system requirements)

  • TCEQ – Texas Commission of Environmental Quality
    Note: Each state has specific requirements; Texas only example

  • TSA – Transportation Security Administration
    Note: Specifically, cybersecurity programs and unauthorized entry

  • USACE – United States Army Corps of Engineers

  • USCG – United States Coast Guard
    Note: As a state-level example, it would be New York Port Authority
